Facebook takes over Giphy for a price of $400 million and plans to merge with Instagram

Facebook continues to be a frontline in the technical domain. The popular creative content sharing platform, Giphy, is going to be a list of FB’s new products. Giphy is a platform commonly used for creating and sharing gifs. Now, you will be able to use GIF available on the platform with several apps like Facebook, Instagram, and even WhatsApp. However, the deal cost FB a lot of money. According to the official report, the platform did not come for cheap. But the social media giant acquired it for a sum of around $400 million.

FB already allowed its users to share GIFs from Giphy using Giphy’s API to source gifs to the application for years. The API was under use with many applications including Messenger, WhatsApp, and Instagram for a long time. According to the media house, 50% of the website’s traffic was through various applications of FB. Half of all this traffic was from Instagram alone.

Giphy: Now a part of Facebook

However, under the new undertaking, Giphy will live as a part of the Instagram team. This will make it easy for users to send GIFs and stickers as a medium in Instagram stories and direct messages. But, as of now, users will not see any immediate changes in either of the platforms. It seems like 2020 is a big year of achievements for Facebook with the latest release of Dark Mode 2020 developer update.

People can still upload GIFs in all platforms using APIs, and Giphy’s creative community will keep delivering great creative content. This makes Facebook, the dominant force in social media networks. It is mainly because many platforms depend on Giphy API to deliver Gifs on their platforms. The companies include Twitter, Pinterest, Reddit, Slack to name a few. All of these companies are direct competitors of Facebook. There is added tension in these company’s policies with respect to how to go forward from here.
